Nationwide Children’s Hospital® Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) Program has been granted Joint Accreditation for the maximum allotted 6-year term running through November 2025. Because of Nationwide Children’s history of education collaboration and a focus on quality improvement, we were well positioned for the full accreditation term. Nationwide Children’s officially rolled out the Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) Program in early summer 2020. Joint Accreditation was built on the principle that interprofessional education (IPE), designed to improve interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) in health care delivery, can improve patient outcomes. Launched in 2009, Joint Accreditation is a collaboration of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). As a jointly accredited provider, Nationwide Children’s Hospital provides education programs planned by the team, for the team. The Joint Accreditation designation allows for a single application process so that national level continuing education credit can be offered more easily across a spectrum of disciplines. Currently, these include:
Physicians (ACCME) Nurses (ANCC) Pharmacists (APCE) Psychologists (APA) Physician Assistants (AAPA) Social Workers (ASWB ACE) Dentistry ADA CERP)
Additionally, a new electronic reporting system will help to improve efficiency and access to information for both the education program providers and the participants. Participants can access course information and transcripts here. Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s long history of quality improvement is aligned with the projected outcomes of the IPCE Program. Research has shown that interprofessional education activities planned by the team, for the team, result in positive outcomes including:
Changed individual behaviors Organizational level changes Patient care including:
Mortality rates Recorded clinical errors Length of stay Patient satisfaction
The Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through Joint Accreditation for its’ education activities. Nationwide Children’s offers over 1,500 Category 1 CME sessions annually, ranging from weekly activities to international research and clinical symposia. Internet-based videos and other electronic educational materials are available for view only or credit.
