When Work Hits Home Hailey S Leukemia Story

The week leading up to Friday, September 24, 2011 was just like any other week. I had recently completed a research project where I work in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. We tested hundreds of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia samples for the presence of mutations and deletions in genes thought to be present in patients who have a poor outcome. While our lab performs many clinical molecular genetics tests, most of my work experience has been focused in our Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) Reference Laboratory....

Beyond The Birds And The Bees Talking With Your Children About Getting Pregnant

“Where do babies come from?” It’s a question children have asked adults for decades. We use different stories and legends - such as storks delivering babies in baskets - to answer those questions until children are older and ready to talk about relationships and sex. As an educator, I have the opportunity to talk to teens about important topics such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs,) sex and pregnancy. Many teens I meet never learned the candid, straight-forward facts about how you can get pregnant....

Bringing Home A Puppy

I remember with such clarity planning for our dog to be picked up and taken to the dog sitter while I was in labor and delivery triage. “This is the last time she’ll be my priority,” I said, half-jokingly, to my husband, as we processed the news that our first born would be arriving a few weeks early. That dog passed away when our son was nine months old. About a year after our dog passed, we decided it was time to add another “toddler” to the mix....

Could Waiting Two Minutes Improve How Newborns Recover From Heart Surgery

A newly funded study is set to determine whether waiting two minutes to clamp a newborn’s umbilical cord after delivery could improve how well he or she recovers from corrective heart surgery. Most physicians typically clamp and cut the umbilical cord immediately following delivery. Some physicians advocate for delaying the clamping of the baby’s umbilical cord, thereby increasing the flow of blood from the placenta to the child. The practice of delayed umbilical cord clamping has been shown to improve hematocrit levels, leading to an increased number of oxygen-carrying red blood cells throughout the body....

Positional Plagiocephaly Flattened Head

Positional plagiocephaly (play gee o SEF uh lee) is a flat area on the back or on one side of your baby’s head due to repeated pressure. A newborn’s head bones are naturally soft. This helps them pass through the birth canal and provides room for his or her growing brain. This softness causes a baby’s head to be moldable to positional pressure, such as lying on her back in a crib, prolonged labor, or even positioning while in her mother’s womb before birth....

The researchers evaluated RCn for cytotoxicity and mechanism of cell death in several cancer cell lines, antitumor efficacy in mouse tumor models and ability to encapsulate chemotherapy drugs....
