Pavlik Harness

The Pavlik (PAV-lick) harness is a brace used for babies with a hip disorder or femur fracture. The harness has chest, shoulder, and leg straps to keep the legs bent and turned outward. This helps the bones or joints to heal and form normally. Your baby can still move while in the harness with the hips and legs in the correct positions. Wearing The Pavlik Harness A medical practitioner (physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant) will apply the harness the first time and teach you how to open and close the shoulder and chest straps....

Regional Anesthesia For Pediatric Knee Surgery Reduces Pain Speeds Recovery

A recent study of an ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia technique, called femoral nerve block, shows that it leads to less opioid use and allows the majority of patients to go home within hours of surgery. As many as 98 percent of all pediatric knee surgeries performed at Nationwide Children’s Hospital were done in an outpatient setting, as a result of this method that reduces post-operative pain and speeds recovery. “Our goal with this technique is to reduce pain, which improves patient outcomes and patient satisfaction,” said Tarun Bhalla, MD, director of Acute Pain and Regional Anesthesia at Nationwide Children’s and a co-author of the study....

Residents Fellows Attendings Oh My Who Are All These People

When your child is in the hospital, the number of doctors who will visit during the day and on rounds can be overwhelming. Who are all of these people? Are they real doctors? An important saying from medical school is, “You learn to swim in the water, not in the library.” However, we don’t throw students into the “deep end” and see if they drown or not. Medical education is a series of steps with increasing degrees of independence and responsibility....

Treatment To Improve Degenerating Muscle Gains Strength

A study appearing in Science Translational Medicine puts scientists one step closer to clinical trials to test a gene delivery strategy to improve muscle mass and function in patients with certain degenerative muscle disorders. Severe weakness of the quadriceps is a defining feature of several neuromuscular disorders. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have shown that a gene delivery strategy that produces follistatin – a naturally occurring protein that inhibits myostatin, a growth factor expressed specifically in skeletal muscle – directly to the quadriceps of non-human primates results in long-term gene expression with muscle enhancing effects, including larger muscles with greater strength....

Ultrasound

An ultrasound exam is a type of imaging that uses sound waves to see inside the body. It is used on many parts of the body, depending on the questions a doctor has. The technologist uses a camera to look specifically at the area the doctor requests us to look at. Why is an Ultrasound Exam Used? Ultrasound is often the first study used because radiation is not used, as is typical with other imaging modalities....

Holiday Candles Tips To Keep Your Family Safe

Candles are often used at this time of year – for religious or cultural celebrations or to make the house smell nice. Many families have traditions around holiday candles and most children are eager to participate in the lighting festivities – but when can they safely do so? Ultimately, it’s up to the parent to determine when their child is ready to help light candles. If you feel your child is responsible enough to handle open flames, have an adult use matches or a lighter to light the first candle, then have kids use that candle to light the rest....

How To Transition From A Pediatrician To Adult Healthcare Provider

One of the toughest challenges pediatricians face is facilitating the transitioning of care of their adolescent patients to their future adult healthcare providers. What IS transition? Transition is defined as “the purposeful, planned movement of adolescents and young adults with chronic physical and medical conditions from child-centered to adult-oriented health care systems” (Blum, et al. 1993. Journal of Adolescent Medicine). This differs from the transfer of care, which refers to the actual move from one healthcare provider to another....
