Scientists have discovered a new form of dystrophin, a protein critical to normal muscle function, and identified the genetic mechanism responsible for its production. Studies of the new protein isoform, published online Aug. 10 in Nature Medicine and led by a team in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, suggest it may offer a novel therapeutic approach for some patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a debilitating neuromuscular condition that usually leaves patients unable to walk on their own by age 12....

Each year, more than 300,000 sports-related traumatic brain injuries occur in the United States. These brain injuries are also known as concussions. Concussions can happen to any athlete, male or female, in any sport. While such injuries may not always be preventable, physicians and athletic trainers are able to do more to recognize and treat concussions to make sure athletes are fully recovered before resuming play. Returning to play too soon after a brain injury, or concussion, may lead to serious life-threatening complications....

Expulsion rates of children prior to kindergarten are at rates up to 34 times higher than the rates of children expelled from kindergarten through 12th grade, combined. In addition, boys are being expelled at a rate of 4.5 times that of girls, and children of color are significantly more likely to be expelled.
