During the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, fellows are required to participate in several seminars, conferences and rounds during their time at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Year I Summer Introductory Course This introductory course includes basic interviewing skills of children and adolescents in both lecture and live interview format. A colonoscopy is a test that allows the doctor to look directly at the lining of the large intestine (colon) using a long flexible tube that has a light and video chip at the end (colonoscopy). Prior to this test the child must take medication that will clean stool out of the colon. The colonoscopy is done while the child is asleep under anesthesia. The colonoscopy is passed through the anus, into the rectum and then around the remainder of the colon....

Epilepsy, a brain disorder that occurs when the electrical signals in the brain are disrupted, affects about two million Americans. Most people with Epilepsy respond well to medication, but in approximately 25-30 percent of patients, medication doesn’t work. As an alternative to medication, the FDA approved implantation of a vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) in patients older than 12 to help control or reduce the seizures that occur because of epilepsy, but until recently, there was no data to illustrate how children younger than 12 years of age would respond to VNS implantation....

Braces have been put on your teeth to make them straight and nice-looking. It is important to keep your teeth and gums clean and free of plaque (plak) while your braces are on. Plaque is a harmful layer of bacteria on the teeth that can cause cavities. Without regular brushing, your teeth may decay. You Will Need A small toothbrush (small enough to reach around the braces). The bristles should be made of soft, polished nylon with a flat brushing surface....

Tears are produced by the tear gland (Picture 1). Tears are in the eye all the time - not just when someone cries. The tears keep the eyes from feeling dry. Tears also help to wash away any dirt that gets into the eyes. Tears normally leave the eye through an opening on the inside corner of each eye (Picture 1). They flow through a tube (the tear duct) into a tear sac under the skin alongside the nose....

Helper cells traditionally thought to only assist killer white blood cells may be the frontline warriors when battling hepatitis A infection. These are the findings from a Nationwide Children’s Hospital study appearing in a recent issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine. Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. Despite the availability of an effective vaccine, the virus infects millions of people worldwide each year and remains a global public health problem, especially in underdeveloped countries....

How do I Prepare an Insulin Pen? Calculate your insulin dose (see chapter seven). Wash your hands. Read the label on the insulin pen to make sure you have the right pen. Take the cap off of the pen. Use alcohol to clean the rubber seal on the end of the pen. Remove paper tab from the pen needle. Push the capped needle onto the pen. Tighten needle by screwing clockwise....

There is often confusion amongst parents and coaches as to whether shortness-of-breath during exercise is a result of asthma or simply being out-of-shape. The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon will pass by the event’s namesake charitable partner for its 35th running in October. The risk and nature of injury in the sport of boxing has generated a great deal of controversy in the medical community, especially in relation to youth boxing. A new study, conducted by researchers in the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, examined boxing injuries among participants 6 years of age and older from 1990 to 2008. During the 19-year study period, an average of 8,700 boxing injuries were treated in United States emergency departments each year, and approximately 2,500 of those injuries were to children and adolescents 6 to 17 years of age....
