Kids Behavior And The Full Moon

The full moon. Some said it had the power to turn a sleeping human into a ferocious wolf-like creature—if the poor soul drank rainwater out of a wolf’s footprint before falling asleep outside on certain cloudless summer nights. And the only way to stop such a beast is with a bullet cast from pure silver. That’s one story. Others refused to conduct business when the moon was full, citing high probability of the deal’s failure or being cheated out of money....

Nelin Lab

The Nelin Lab’s focus is on inflammatory lung injury and the mechanisms leading to lung diseases, particularly bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). BPD is the most common co-morbidity of extremely preterm birth. To improve the outcomes of these children, pre-clinical and translational work is desperately needed to understand the mechanism underlying disease progression and lung healing. The pathogenesis of BPD is currently incompletely understood, but it is likely multi-factorial with a common pathway of innate immune signaling....

New National Study Examines Bicycle Related Injuries Among Youth

Although bicycles are a healthy and cost-saving alternative for transportation, automobiles continue to be the only consumer product associated with more childhood injuries. Despite bicycle safety programs and legislative efforts designed to enforce the use of bicycle helmets in some cities and states, an estimated 389,300 children and adolescents 18-years and younger were treated in emergency departments for bicycle-related injuries each year between 1990-2005. “While the number of injuries decreased slightly over the 16-year study period, in 2005 an average of 850 children per day were seen in emergency departments for bicycle-related injuries,” said Tracy Mehan, a research associate at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and author of a new study published in the online issue of Clinical Pediatrics....
