According to a new study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, there were more than 950 children 17 years old and younger admitted to U.S. hospitals for traumatic amputations in 2003. Of these cases, finger and thumb amputations accounted for the majority of the injuries (64 percent). Data from this study, published in the January issue of The Journal of Trauma, showed that among children 4-years-old and younger, amputations resulting from being caught in or between objects were the most common, and more than 80 percent of these injuries involved a finger or thumb....
