Catherine Krawczeski, MD, Named Chief of the Department of Pediatrics Catherine Dent Krawczeski, MD, has been named Physician-in-Chief and Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Krawczeski will also serve as Chair of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, pending approval from The Ohio State University Board of Trustees. Dr. Krawczeski will begin this new role in Summer 2022. Dr. Krawczeski has served as division chief of cardiology and co-director of The Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s since 2018, and she also holds the Dunlap Endowed Chair in Cardiology. At The Ohio State University College of Medicine, she has been professor with tenure of pediatrics with co-appointments in Cardiology and Critical Care, and senior vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Krawczeski has been the principal investigator or co-investigator for seven National Institutes of Health grants; author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and abstracts; and presenter at dozens of national and international conferences. Dennis Durbin, MD, MSCE, Named President of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute With the retirement of John Barnard, MD, as president of the internationally renowned Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI), Nationwide Children’s was pleased to announce the official appointment of Dennis Durbin, MD, MSCE, as the third president of the AWRI. Dr. Durbin joined Nationwide Children’s in 2018 as its first chief scientific officer (CSO). As CSO, Dr. Durbin has managed a broad portfolio of research initiatives. He collaboratively led the formation of Andelyn Biosciences, Nationwide Children’s first spin-off contract development and manufacturing organization for gene and cell therapies; created the hospital’s first chief clinical research officer position; has supported the recruitment of over 40 new research-intensive faculty and is overseeing the completion of a fourth research building on the Nationwide Children’s campus, scheduled to open in 2023. Dr. Durbin’s role as president of AWRI will be to establish the vision and strategic direction for the research institute for the future. On March 1, 2022, Nationwide Children’s Hospital formally assumed ownership of Mercy Health – Children’s Hospital, marking the debut of Nationwide Children’s Hospital – Toledo. Nationwide Children’s Hospital – Toledo continues the legacy and vision developed by Mercy Health – Children’s Hospital to provide high-quality, compassionate care to children in the Toledo area. Match Day 2022 Another successful recruitment season has wrapped up, and the Pediatric Residency Training Program is excited to share the results of another successful match. This summer, Nationwide Children’s residency programs will welcome 53 new residents from 35 schools in 16 states and two international- 38 Pediatric, 10 Internal Medicine-Pediatrics and five Child Neurology. This highly impressive group of new physicians will begin training with Nationwide Children’s this July. The physicians and faculty look forward to guiding them towards becoming the next generation of pediatrician leaders. Click here for more details. National Donate Life Month
In 2003, Donate Life America and its partnering organizations created National Donate Life Month. Lifeline of Ohio holds several events in April during National Donate Life Month, including a candlelight ceremony to remember all the Heroes that have donated over the years. This April, Nationwide Children’s Lung Transplant team is raising awareness in hopes more people will become a Hero, choosing organ donation and encouraging their community and colleagues to register as organ, eye or tissue donors. A single donor has the potential to save eight lives through organ donation and heal more than 75 through tissue donation. More than 3,100 people are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant in Ohio. Ohioans may declare their decision to become a donor by registering through the Lifeline of Ohio website at LifelineofOhio.org.
