Nick Yeager, MD, Named Section Chief of Hematology/Oncology/BMT Nicholas (Nick) Yeager, MD, has been named the new section chief of the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant. Dr. Yeager has been with Nationwide Children’s for over 26 years, beginning as a resident before serving as chief resident. He completed his hematology/oncology fellowship and officially joined as faculty in 2003. He has served in numerous roles, including director of the following programs: Hematology/Oncology fellowship, Sarcoma, Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer, Fertility and Preservation, and most recently, service line director of Oncology. Dr. Yeager has served on various committees, including the Institutional Review Board, Graduate Medical Education Committee, Assessment Consultation Team, and Ethics Committee locally as well several committees for various national organizations such as the Livestrong Young Adult Cancer Alliance, American Association of Cancer Research, American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. He has also recently helped to secure transformative awards as principal investigator on a Program Development award from Teen Cancer America in conjunction with the James Cancer Hospital team. Dr. Yeager will transition into this role from Randal S. Olshefski, MD, who is stepping down as section chief of Hematology/Oncology/BMT. Dr. Olshefski will continue to serve our patients and division as a hematologist/oncologist and professor of pediatrics at The Ohio State University.
Linda Baker, MD, Renowned Urologist, Joins Nationwide Children’s Hospital Linda Baker, MD, a 22-year NIH-funded physician surgeon-scientist, joins Nationwide Children’s as a principal investigator in The Kidney and Urinary Tract Center and as a professor of pediatrics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Baker has met, evaluated and cared for dozens of children with Eagle-Barrett syndrome, or prune belly syndrome (PBS), a rare pediatric bladder disorder. Her recent research has focused on identifying its genetic basis as a means to understand bladder physiology and underactivity states. Clinically, Dr. Baker specializes in complex genitourinary surgical reconstruction and contributes to new discoveries for children with PBS, kidney stones, disorders of sexual development, cryptorchidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, testicular torsion and congenital female vaginal anomalies. She is also a national leader in corrective vaginal surgery. With a personalized medicine approach, her research team performs cutting-edge DNA testing using next-generation sequencing technologies to discover their causes. Her laboratory combines genetically engineered mouse models of pediatric urologic congenital malformations with clinically valuable human samples. In 2001, Dr. Baker created a pediatric urology DNA/tissue repository that houses over 3,000 specimens from pediatric urology patients and their families. Dr. Baker earned her bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University and her medical degree from the University of Louisville. She then completed a urology residency at the University of Virginia, where she went on to be an American Foundation for Urological Disease Research Scholar before pursuing her postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric urology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Following her fellowship, Dr. Baker joined the Division of Pediatric Urology at Children’s Health Specialty Center Dallas Campus and the Department of Urology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she conducted research in the Center for Human Genetics/McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development and the Charles and Jane Pak Center for Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research. This milestone marks an important moment in the hospital’s history and a testament to the dedication of the staff and the hospital’s commitment to providing the best care possible. These transplants have been used to create best outcomes for patients across the division, including brain and central nervous system tumors, lymphoma, leukemia, sickle cell disease, bone marrow failure and more.
