Paige Lavender, PharmD PGY2 Master of Science and Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Resident

Hometown: Murray, KY

Undergraduate School: Purdue University Pharmacy School: Purdue University College of Pharmacy Why I Chose Nationwide Children’s: When looking for pharmacy administration residencies, it was very important to me to choose a place dedicated to helping me grow not only as a well-rounded clinician, but as a strong leader. It was apparent to me after the interview process that Nationwide Children’s Hospital would be a place that would push and challenge me while also providing the support I needed to be successful. The entire pharmacy team from, administration, to preceptors, to technicians, have all invested in both my personal and professional success making me feel extremely supported throughout all facets of the program. This residency is unique in the sense that I get to train in a pediatric setting while still getting exposure to adult medicine, which was something that really drew me to the program. In my first year I am also afforded the opportunity to manage the inpatient pharmacy intern program, participate in on-call experiences, and develop both formal and informal mentors. Nationwide has become such a special place to me in a short amount of time, and I am excited for all the knowledge, relationships, and personal growth I will gain as I train at this wonderful institution. Areas of Interest: Health-system leadership, leadership development pharmacy operations, supply chain management, and clinical management Personal Interests: Cooking and baking, working out, trying new coffee shops, spending quality time with family and friends and interior design

PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residents

Karielle Shaffery, PharmD PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Resident

Hometown: Pickerington, Ohio

Undergraduate Education: Ohio Northern University Pharmacy School: Ohio Northern University Why I chose this residency: I chose this residency because of the unique, pediatric ambulatory care experiences that are offered at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Being such a large institution with some of the Nation’s greatest healthcare providers, I knew I would get incredible opportunities to make an impact on my patients and help advance the profession of pharmacy. Additionally, this program stuck out to me because every pharmacist, technician and intern I spoke with embodied the positive and uplifting culture that NCH works hard to maintain every day. It is clear that the Community Care team has the residents’ best interest at its forefront, and their support and inspiration undoubtedly leads to success over the PGY1 year. Areas of Interest: Pediatric ambulatory care, primary care, and endocrinology Personal Interests: Traveling to new cities, cooking, fashion, and spending time with friends and family

PGY2 - Pediatrics

Meighan Marlo, PharmD PGY2 Pharmacy Resident-Pediatrics

Hometown: Vienna, IL Undergraduate School: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Pharmacy School: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy Why I Chose Nationwide Children’s: My passion for pediatrics originally developed after my first mission trip to Haiti where I saw first-hand the positive impact that pharmacy can have on patient care. Since that time, through the pediatric rotational experiences and pediatric coursework offered through my pharmacy school, my passion for pediatrics grew and my desire to pursue a residency post-graduation with a specific interest in neonatal care was confirmed. I knew I desired a residency program that would provide a multitude of unique pediatric experiences to challenge me while also providing comprehensive neonatal experiences and a welcoming learning environment. The vast specialized opportunities that Nationwide Children’s Hospital has and the phenomenal neonatal experiences that a resident can experience was just what I was looking for and more. Since starting at Nationwide, the continual positive culture, exceptional preceptors, welcoming learning environment, and immense opportunity for resident independence is outstanding. I am forever grateful to have the opportunity to learn at this phenomenal institution alongside such amazing people! Areas of Interest: Neonatal care, critical care and nutrition Personal Interests: Anything active (tennis, running, hiking), reading, baking, trying new coffee shops or bakeries and hanging out with friends and family

Over the past year, I have gained more experience and knowledge than I could have ever anticipated and have seen a true passion for patient care and safety in every single person I have met. I am excited to focus my training this year on pediatric critical care and emergency medicine while continuing to push myself to take advantage of every learning opportunity I am able to. Areas of Interest: pediatric critical care, emergency medicine Personal Interests: traveling, skiing, snowboarding, walking my dog, brunch

PGY-1 Pharmacy Residents

Jen Berg (Slogar), PharmD PGY1 Pharmacy Resident

Hometown: Canton, OH

Undergraduate School: The Ohio State University Pharmacy School: The Ohio State University Why I chose this residency: I was fortunate to have several learning experiences at Nationwide Children’s as a pharmacy student. I worked as an ambulatory intern in the outpatient pharmacies and also completed an inpatient APPE block. I’m excited to continue my training at NCH for many reasons, including the robust safety culture and extensive reach of the clinical pharmacy program. Pharmacists make a huge impact in patient care at NCH and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from the highly experienced preceptors here. Additionally, I am constantly inspired by the hospital’s mission and the ways I’ve seen providers go above and beyond to provide exceptional patient care and support for families that may be visiting from down the street or across the world. NCH is an institution that prioritizes research, education, and clinical services that make a global impact. These qualities create a challenging (but positive!) learning environment that will push me to grow as a pharmacist. I can tell that resident development is a priority in this program and I’m excited to explore my professional interests throughout the year. Areas of Interest: academia, emergency medicine, behavioral health, transitions of care Personal Interests: working out, volleyball, reading, true crime, breakfast food, and my dog

Upon graduation, I knew I wanted to work in a pediatric setting and that Nationwide Children’s Hospital would be the perfect fit. The hospital not only provided healthcare to this population but also offers so many other great services and assistance to improve both the patient’s and their family’s lives. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work here for six years prior to transitioning into my residency so I know the supportive learning environment here will only help continue to grow my career. Areas of Interest: Hematology/Oncology/BMT, Transitions of Care, Emergency Medicine Personal Interests: cooking/baking, biking, spending time with my dogs, traveling

  • Why I Chose Nationwide Children’s:
  • When looking for pharmacy administration residencies, it was very important to me to choose a place dedicated to helping me grow not only as a well-rounded clinician, but as a strong leader.
