WHAT: Nationwide Children’s Hospital Cleft Lip and Palate Center and 22q Center Family Support Groups Kick-Off WHEN: Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 1 to 2:30 pm (all will take a break from enjoying The Zoo and gather together) WHERE: The Columbus Zoo Waters Edge Boardwalk Shelters (near Shores zone) WHO/WHY: 300 families affected by cleft lip and palate and the 22q deletion syndrome, hospital staff and Sertoma Club volunteers will gather to meet each other, share their experiences and launch the new Cleft Lip and Palate Center Family Support Group and the 22q Center Family Support Group at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Expert plastic surgery is only the first step in a long process and Nationwide Children’s Hospital recognizes the importance of caring for the whole child and his/her family. The Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers comprehensive care from a multi-disciplinary team to address pediatric patient needs. Cleft lip and palate is the second most common birth defect in the U.S. The Nationwide Children’s Cleft Lip and Palate Center offers care from a multi-disciplinary team of nationally recognized clinicians specializing in plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, otolaryngology, speech-language pathology, nursing, dentistry, social work, audiology, genetics and psychology. 22q deletion syndrome, also known as velocardiofacial or DiGeorge Syndrome, is a genetic disorder that affects one out of every 4,000 live births. The Nationwide Children’s 22q Center provides children and their families with access to a multi-disciplinary team of expert clinicians who understand their special needs providing comprehensive individualized diagnostic and management services in genetics, cardiology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, speech and language pathology, developmental pediatrics, immunology, neuropsychology, behavioral health, audiology, otolaryngology, endocrinology, hematology, neurology, orthopedics and urology.
