Center for Microbial Pathogenesis

Dr. Gunn’s laboratory studies Salmonella and Francisella pathogenesis. The research is particularly focused on bacterial biofilms and regulatory systems that control virulence and modifications of the bacterial cell surface. These attributes are examined in the context of acute and chronic infections where they investigate the contribution of gene regulation and biofilm formation on pathogenesis, immune system recognition, and survival within host phagocytic cells. Additionally, the laboratory is developing new vaccine and therapeutic approaches to counteract both Salmonella and Francisella infections. The Gunn lab developed a mouse model for chronic Salmonella infection of the gallbladder and uses this model to study both host and microbial factors that are responsible for establishing and maintaining asymptomatic, persistent infection of this organ.

Biography

John S. Gunn, PhD, is a principal investigator in the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He is also a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Gunn is an associate director of the Ohio State Infectious Diseases Institute and the faculty director of the Biomedical Science Major. Dr. Gunn received his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and obtained his PhD from The University of Maryland. His postdoctoral studies were performed at Harvard Medical School and The University of Washington. The research program of the Gunn Lab studies host-microbe interactions in the gram-negative pathogens Salmonella and Francisella that lead to both acute and chronic disease. Their primary focus is determining the molecular mechanisms underlying chronic carriage of Salmonella Typhi in the gallbladder, which is mediated by biofilm formation on gallstones. Typhoid fever, caused by S. Typhi, is a global disease that disproportionally affects children.
