The Crerand Lab is dedicated to improving psychosocial outcomes for children born with medical conditions that affect physical appearance including craniofacial conditions such as cleft lip and palate and differences of sex development/variations in sex traits. Crerand, PhD, is a principal investigator in the Center for Biobehavioral Health at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor of Pediatrics and Plastic Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. As a clinical psychologist, she works with the Cleft Lip and Palate Center and the Center for Complex Craniofacial Disorders at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, providing psychological consultation and treatment for patients with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial conditions. Her clinical and research interests focus on psychosocial adjustment and body image in children and adolescents with acquired and congenital medical conditions and psychosocial outcomes for youth with craniofacial conditions and differences of sex development/variations in sex traits. Dr. Crerand graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Drexel University and completed an American Psychological Association (APA) Accredited pre-doctoral internship at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System with a focus on behavioral medicine. Dr. Crerand completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine’s Center for Weight and Eating Disorders. Prior to joining Nationwide Children’s, Dr. Crerand served as a psychologist in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia from 2005-2013 and was an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine from 2009-2013.

Hailey Umbaugh graduated from Saint Vincent College with Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and minor in children’s studies. Before coming to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, she cultivated a passion for child development through her work as an Undergraduate Research Lab Manager at the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media, which she further specialized into youth outreach and behavioral health programming as a Youth Coordinator and Therapeutic Staff Support. In the Crerand Lab, Hailey engages in a variety of research task including participant recruitment and retention, data inquiries and analyses, REDCap survey creation and management, and qualitative coding and analyses, among others. Hailey’s long-term goal is to obtain her Ph.D. and continue her education in child development, women’s studies, writing, art and literature.

She is a certified speech-language pathologist and spent the past 15 years dedicated to identifying successful early interventions for young children at-risk for language and literacy difficulties. Prior to joining Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Naomi supported grant-funded research at The Ohio State University. She will oversee day-to-day study operations and oversight at NCH. She will lead participant recruitment and enrollment, study visit tracking and scheduling, assist with the development of the research protocols, data collection and transfer, and support regulatory/IRB related aspects.
